Star anise delivers a bold, licorice-like flavor with a gentle numbing sensation that unfolds as it cooks. Best known as a defining spice in pho, it also adds depth and complexity to broths, soups, and stews, where its flavor intensifies the longer it simmers. For balanced results, remove the pods after about 15 minutes to prevent the broth from becoming overpowering. These aromatic pieces can also be used to infuse fruits, syrups, or baked goods with subtle spice. Broken star anise varies naturally in size, ranging from nearly whole pods to individual points.

How long do spices keep?
Most spices don’t spoil, but they do lose flavor over time. Whole spices hold their flavor for about 2–3 years, while ground spices are best used within 6–9 months.
Why do spices lose flavor?
Flavor comes from essential oils. Over time, those oils evaporate, taking aroma and taste with them. Grinding spices releases those oils immediately—great for flavor, but it also speeds up that loss. That’s why freshly ground spices are more vibrant, and why we recommend buying smaller amounts more often.
How should I store my spices?
Keep spices in airtight containers, away from sunlight, heat, and moisture. Avoid storing them near the stove or on a windowsill.
Are your products gluten-free?
All of our spices and blends are gluten-free. For prepackaged items without a gluten-free label, we can’t guarantee they are free from gluten.
