Why Top Hat
The name Top Hat is rooted in family.
Matt had a close relationship with his grandfather, a man who was always dressed to the nines — suit pressed, shoes polished, hat perfectly in place. It wasn’t about fashion. It was about pride, character, and showing up for the people around you.
After his grandfather passed, Matt was given a few of his hats. He began wearing them in the spice shop — at first as a quiet tribute, then as part of his everyday uniform.
A few years later, he discovered local Bend hatter Cate Havstad and commissioned a custom hat to carry on that tradition. What started as a personal nod to family history slowly became part of the identity of the shop itself.
Today, the hat is a fixture at our Bend store in the Old Mill District. And somewhere along the way, Matt became known simply as “the guy in the hat.”
Top Hat isn’t just a name. It’s a reminder to carry tradition forward, honor where you come from, and show up every day with intention.
