Bold, warming, and deeply aromatic, this traditional Ethiopian spice blend brings layered heat that builds like a long trail climb through the high desert. Berbere combines chiles and earthy spices for rich, full-bodied flavor without being overwhelming. Commonly used on meats, vegetables, and lentils, it’s essential for classic Ethiopian stews like doro wat and other wats. For an easy marinade, blend 2 tablespoons with olive oil and lemon juice, then marinate overnight. A grounding, soulful blend that adds depth and warmth to everyday cooking.

This paprika-based spice blend delivers a balanced sweet-and-savory base with savory garlic and warm sweet-spice notes, finished with peppery character and a confident medium-hot heat.

If you like bold heat, use Berbere anywhere you’d normally use curry powder. It’s great on beef, lamb, vegetables, tofu, duck, and lentils, and works especially well in stews, soups, and roasted dishes. Rub onto meats before cooking or stir into beans and grains. For a quick paste, mix equal parts seasoning, oil, and hot water and use as a base for sauces or marinades.

Hungarian sweet paprika, cayenne, roasted garlic, salt, allspice, ginger, cardamom

FAQ

How long do spices keep?

Most spices don’t spoil, but they do lose flavor over time. Whole spices hold their flavor for about 2–3 years, while ground spices are best used within 6–9 months.

Why do spices lose flavor?

Flavor comes from essential oils. Over time, those oils evaporate, taking aroma and taste with them. Grinding spices releases those oils immediately—great for flavor, but it also speeds up that loss. That’s why freshly ground spices are more vibrant, and why we recommend buying smaller amounts more often.

How should I store my spices?

Keep spices in airtight containers, away from sunlight, heat, and moisture. Avoid storing them near the stove or on a windowsill.

Are your products gluten-free?

All of our spices and blends are gluten-free. For prepackaged items without a gluten-free label, we can’t guarantee they are free from gluten.
